THE PROJECT
The Megalithic Explorer™ is an augmented reality (AR) experience, designed to bring people closer to the magical mystery of Ancient Britain.
By stepping through a virtual portal hosted on a smartphone, users get to explore six of the United Kingdom’s most famous prehistoric monuments - Bryn celli Dou, Meini Hirion, Stenness, Ring of Brodgar, Auchencar, and Machrie Moor – from anywhere in the world.
And as they tread the simulated ground, without crowds of tourists blocking their view or over-charismatic presenters interrupting their thoughts, an ethereal soundtrack brings the atmosphere of each site to life.
HOW WE DID IT

Our main goal with this app was to help remove users from reality. To allow those who would normally struggle, to escape and explore. And since there’s been centuries of speculation over whether these monuments are actually portals, used to transport people from one place to another in a matter of seconds, we chose to create a world in which they are – using LiDAR technology to design a gateway which appears in our users’ immediate surroundings via the app.
Then to capture each megalith in all their glory, and to give our users a complete, uninterrupted view of their surroundings, our technicians used a collection of high-definition 360 cameras and spent hours carefully stitching the footage gathered together.
We hosted everything in our favourite game-development software – Unity, and hired a talented music producer to bring the magical mystery of these ancient sites to life.

THE GOAL

This project was created in response to our founder – Keith Myers’ - passion for ancient history and sites of sacred mystery.
“I wanted to share my love for ancient history with the world. And in the wake of the Coronavirus Pandemic, I wanted to bring these incredible sites to people who might not be able to get to them physically anytime soon.”
The ancient artefacts which litter the United Kingdom have never truly been understood. They have only ever been guessed at. And the truth is, nobody really knows why they were built, who built them, or when. Everything is conjecture.
The Megalithic Explorer app allows you to make up your own mind. To take in the sites and come to your own conclusions after exploring them.
